Observation of Highly Successful People by Gary Tilkin

Observation of Highly Successful People by Gary Tilkin

Remember the old quote, “Successful people do the things that unsuccessful people won’t do!”.  That makes sense, doesn’t it?  Of course “success” is relative, and can be defined in many ways.  One area in which I consider myself successful is the ability to observe people, actions, trends, and patterns. Let’s see if our observations are the same.

 “Highly Successful People….”

  • Take immediate and decisive action: When a simple, daily task comes by their desk, they touch it once, act on it, and move forward to the next task rather than pushing it aside for later. (Not to be confused with long-term far-reaching decisions or projects.)
  • Use a business journal: Not a yellow pad, not a random piece of paper, but a Business Journal. As things come up that warrant writing down, leaders take notes. This is both a message to their respective teams, as well as themselves, of the importance of the topic being recorded.
  • Want strong, opinionated team members around them: Successful leaders want to be challenged in a respectful way. They want to have experts in specific areas who can support a part of their vision and agenda. When one of their inner circle leadership team speaks up with an alternate position, even if it contradicts what the leader said, a great leader listens with intent. Steve Jobs’ quote was, “The best idea always wins.”.
  • Inspire creative thinking, sometimes in unconventional ways: I had one leader ask me a question once, “Gary, do you ever wonder why I bring up some of the most stupid ideas in the world at a meeting?” My response was, “Yes, I did wonder!” He said, “Because I want to see if any of my inner circle leaders will challenge me with a GREAT alternative idea.” Interesting.
  • Share The Success: By genuinely giving your team all the accolades for a great idea, or a job exceptionally well-done, the leader gets even more compliments on their leadership skills, and inspires continued growth and success from their team. Be humble, and gain more positive rewards. Leaders are worth their weight in gold.

Think about the above observations, and feel free to send me more. I will give you the byline.  Thanks for your time, and be passionate with your future.
