How can I own my own business? Simple: Make that decision. The American dream is to become an entrepreneur, to be your own boss. Some folks have a new product or concept that they want to market. Others have a service they want to provide. Regardless, your business is right there in front of you. So, do yourself a favor and take some action; or simply admit that you are unwilling to take the risk.
You might ask how am I am expert on this subject? I’m not. I’m just one of those who took the risk, and followed through. You can do it, too.
Thirty years ago, when I started my own business, there was no Internet for me to check out how to do something. No quick source of accurate information to see the possibilities. Today, we have the web. So, rather than posting pictures of your food, letting people know what store you just entered, or sharing your very private thoughts, instead, spend your time researching how to develop a written strategic plan, to create a small business corporation, or look into partnership possibilities and other structures to build your business. Go online, or get a lawyer to help you set it up. Open your Microsoft Word program, and start writing your strategic plan.
Your plan is everything, yet nothing at the same time. It gives you a track to run on, but the plan evolves over time. However, objectives or outcomes you develop are another story. They are in stone. So before you set them, think them through and do your research. Now, follow your plan of action, make adjustments when necessary, and enjoy making something out of nothing.
Is that it? Yep, that is it. Once you take a credible first step forward, you are well ahead of most folks who never follow through, who talk a good game and then make excuses on why it wouldn’t work. A word of advice: with aggressive decisions come real life consequences. As both positive and negative consequences happen, handle them yourself. Don’t play the blame game, or expect for your spouse, parents, or other friends and family members to dig you out. The solution is 100% in your brain, if you utilize it.
Remember: lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way. Above all, enjoy your venture.
